Business owners have a lot to learn about support from Batman.
Every September, Batman Day rolls around, always the third Saturday of the month.
It’s a real thing, sanctioned and everything.
If you’ve never picked up one of his comics or sat through the films, here’s a rundown of who he actually is.
Bruce Wayne is a wealthy businessman who fights crime at night in the fictional Gotham City, dressed as a bat.
He has no superpowers; he just relies on money, gadgets, and grit.
That’s his reputation.
A lone vigilante who answers to nobody and does everything himself.
But this isn’t actually true.
Batman Doesn’t Work Alone
Alfred Pennyworth raised him after his parents died and still runs his household.
He’s the one person allowed to tell him he’s got it wrong. He also patches him up after every fight.
James Gordon, the police commissioner, opens doors Batman could never open by himself.
A nod from Gordon does half the work before Batman even shows up.
Robin, whichever version you know, notices what Batman misses and says so when he disagrees.
Lucius Fox runs Wayne Enterprises and builds every gadget Batman uses.
Take the cape away and what’s left is a founder surrounded by people.
One of them is senior enough to challenge him.
Another is loyal enough to tell him the truth.
Someone else handles the parts he’s genuinely bad at. That’s the real Batcave.
Most Business Owners Don’t Have a Batcave
Plenty of business owners run their company the way Batman is famous for running Gotham.
They do it alone, and they keep quiet about the parts that aren’t working.
“I’ve got this” becomes the only acceptable answer.
Recent research found nearly half of UK small business owners have felt lonely or isolated while running their company.
Among owners of the smallest businesses, that figure rises to 56%.
The smaller the operation, the more likely someone is carrying it entirely on their own.
None of this shows on the outside.
The business looks fine.
The owner turns up and answers emails at nine at night.
Underneath, there’s no equivalent of Alfred checking his blind spots.
Nobody’s playing Gordon and opening doors on his behalf.
Nothing catches what Robin would catch, the stuff he’s too close to see.
Building Your Own Version of the Batcave
You don’t need a butler or a police commissioner. You need the same roles, minus the cape.
Find your Alfred.
Someone who tells you the truth, even when it’s not what you want to hear.
Who you’ll actually listen to when they do.
Find your Gordon.
An ally outside the business who can open a door you can’t reach alone.
Whether that’s an introduction, a contact, or a different view of the same problem.
Find your Robin.
Someone close enough to the work to catch what you miss, and confident enough to say so when they disagree.
Robin wasn’t more experienced than Batman; he just paid attention to different things instead.
Find your Lucius Fox.
Hand over the part of the business you’re genuinely bad at, instead of muddling through it because you feel you should manage everything yourself.
Batman doesn’t build his own gadgets, someone better placed handles that instead.
Say the Quiet Part Out loud.
Whether that’s an average month, a decision you’re unsure about, or something that’s been bothering you for weeks. None of it feels urgent enough to mention on its own, which is exactly why it piles up.
Give Someone Permission to Challenge You, and Actually Listen When They Use It.
Alfred wouldn’t be much use if Batman ignored him every time he raised a concern, and neither will yours if you do the same.
The Real Lesson
Batman gets away with the lone hero act because he’s fictional.
Alfred, Gordon, Robin, and Lucius do most of the actual work, and the story never dwells on it.
Real business owners don’t get a comic book to hide the join.
Running a business the way Batman runs Gotham, alone, can feel like strength, BUT usually isn’t.
It’s worth working out who’s playing Alfred for you right now.
